CHAPTER 23
After we watched the video again, Sally reached into her pocket, pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to me.
âWhat do you think?â she asked after Iâd opened the sheet and read the list of names it contained.
I smiled. âIâm not following,â I said. âMore suspects?â
âThose are the people from the restaurant association that Ryan didnât get along with,â she explained. âIn the last couple of years that he served as president, he got into some pretty nasty fights with a few folks about petty grievances.â
âCan you give me an example?â
âWell, Tamara Haynes,â she said. âRyan accused her of trying to undermine his leadership role because someone forwarded an email that she sent to a few friends about how frustrated she was when he ignored her request for more outside speakers.â
âSeems like a fair thing to ask about,â I said. âIâve heard from many people that Ryan seemed to give those slots to his buddies almost exclusively.â
âAlmost?â Sally smiled. âHe only invited his friends to speak at the annual conference and quarterly workshops. I suspect that was because they gave him a kickback for the new business they garnered from guild members after the meetings.â
âA quid pro quo type of arrangement,â I said.
Sally nodded, but didnât say anything.
âWhat do you plan to do with your lists?â I asked.
âIâm giving both of them to the police,â she answered. âBut I wanted to ask if you think I missed anyone. You attend our meetings pretty regularly, so I thought maybe you picked up on some tension between Ryan and other people in the group.â
I glanced at the roster a second time. Then I said, âNot that I can think of. I trust your judgment. Youâve been involve with the group a lot longer than me.â
âDo you think it will help?â she said.
âThe police always welcome tips from knowledgeable and reputable sources,â I answered. âSince you qualify as both, I bet theyâll be happy to hear what you have to share with them.â
âI just donât want to come across as a kook,â she said.
I reached over and squeezed her hand. âYou donât need to worry about that. Youâll come across as someone who wants to help identify the person responsible for your friendâs death.â
She looked into my eyes. âI actually liked Ryan,â she said. âThere were a lot of people who didnât, but I saw through the macho armor. I knew there was a good, thoughtful man behind the tough guy womanizer that he appeared to be at first glance.â
I returned the sheet of paper and watched as she slipped it back into her pocket.
âFeel like a bite to eat?â I asked.
She leaned back against the chair. âI want to take care of this now,â she said. âI called earlier and talked to a detective in Carlton Springs. Sheâs expecting me this afternoon.â
âWas it Zoe Logan?â
âYes, thatâs right,â Sally said. âI guess sheâs handling the case.â
âIâve talked to her a few times,â I said. âAnd sheâs also friendly with Dina Kincaid from the Crescent Creek PD.
